Monday Moaning: Job Haunting!
Yes it is a word play as it is haunting me every day and how jobs become ghosts of a past.
I have been moving on the job market for some time again and to my surprise things have changed loads. Being a certain age it becomes harder to find a job I would be capable of.
As a hands on kind of guy with a pair of brains (I think) I was and always have been doing manual labour. The key is in the manual of it as I am used to using my own two hands. I worked factories before but now hardly any need me. They ask technical classed people to work a button and able to repair the machinery. It is precision machinery and though I am sure I am capable of learning it might be to digital for me.
Sure I know about computers and still build my own or that for family. But to be honest it isn’t that hard any more. The difficulty is in the laptops and newer tablets that more often get tossed away as unrepairable whenever it is not a cracked screen. And even to replace those they ask for papers to show you learned a basic.
Maybe I am old fashioned to want to use my own hands instead of press a button and watch a machine do what I can as well. Yes, I am slower but one should wonder if that is a bad thing. My brains are also capable and find my own ways to optimize my own way around the work I have to do.
To be honest I think it is up to the worker to optimize his own work how ever they can. You al might have been there when a someone told you how something worked and you follow their lead. Copying their way of working. Here is when a brain comes into play. As simply copying is not always good for you. Adjusting yourself to work more sufficiently is what each one of us should do.
But here we are pressing a button of a machine. How efficient is that? Why do I need a brain?
So the job market has changed a lot. Manual labour is a thing of the past and old traditional jobs are disappearing.
I am a butcher by trade, It is not the first time I mentioned this. But I get heartaches at the butcher these days. Or supermarket where the butcher completely vanished and just have packages of meat that sells best.
What is wrong with me I wonder for wanting a brisket and put 4 hours of love into it while preparing it. They don’t sell it any more, hell I can’t even pre order because a 16 year old doesn’t even know what the hell I am talking about and calling the meat centre he gets answer like; he wants what? What is a brisket?
Cutting a thumb thick pork chop or pork belly is a big No-No as well. They want to make money and get as much slices from a single piece of meat. But it sucks it is not how it should be. They should be thicker as they stay juicier that way. It truly aches my heart that people these days hardly know even how to put love in their cooking. It all has to be fast and easy so most cuts ends up in hamburgers and minced meat.
Job market as I am deviating from the actual subject.
They ask more office workers and caretakers, nurses than anything else. I am not an office person I can’t sit in a cubicle or behind a desk. I am one of those people who enjoyed the freedom of moving around and work hard. Construction I used to that to, but prefab buildings are just giant Lego blocks. A house is build in three days. And with less people.
And those factories are not using the amount of men left to usually build a house.
It simply means they all need less people to do more work and make more money.
Where does that leave me?
Stuck between two stools ( is that correct ).
Being a 35+ something older I become to expensive for any simple job and as I do not have any papers other than the butcher I am not schooled enough to do other jobs.
Yes papers these days still say more than any kind of experience. Ever heard of a driver age 18 with 3 years of experience. This was years ago, but I got rejected at age 21. With being to old. And this still happening these days.
And face it if you do have papers at age 18 just coming from school they also ask 5 years of experience.
How crocked has the job market become.
How is it possible it only thrives when you have somebody to vouch for you. Or help you into that seat. Why does money get you things faster when someone else might still be doing a better job.
Yes it makes me wonder where are going to with this and how far or deep we might be going to fall. How am I going to earn my money at my age.
I am not giving up I might run into a job one day, but for how long.
Even supermarkets are looking for ways to take out the cashier. What is next, robots to fill the shelves. We already have them empty larger shelves in warehouses. Banks are closing as more is done through cell phones and over the internet.
We need less people to jobs that was great working at. Something I enjoyed as well from being outdoors or being a butcher was the human contact. It is all vanishing right in front of our eyes.
Last month I got a picture from someone about a restaurant where nobody works other than the chefs you can’t see. No more people taking orders or bring you the food. Serious?
Are we so caught up and doing everything fast and without hassle. I think somewhere everything is connected and the new devices don’t help much as even our brain is being told what to think and how to think. We are controlled like the machines we control. Or is this just far fetched.
Maybe it is just me being angry or let down. But something is wrong.
Or it is me being old and put a side by modern day thinking that is based on speed and never having enough time.
Guess wanting to take my time for a costumer is out of the question. Share ideas and give or get advise. What is wrong with taking four hours to prepare a beautiful cut of meat.
Yeah I am old and missing the old days though they only been gone 20 years. Guess I have become a bitter old grumpy guy.
i wish i had the answers…
Do we not all… But to just have someone think is as good as an answer, as any.
i just flip a coin and show another side.
great attitude
