The Good Mother!
The door of the cars opens up and Vanessa crawls behind the wheel. Her top is torn and soaked from the showers that had been plaguing the country. The phone in her hand is shaking like a leaf on autumns winds. A gush of freezing cold wind shuts the door by force.
“Mom… Can I drop Peter off… No… Just … Please, okay… Something happened… yes… he did… never again… I am sorry… it’s to late…” She crunches together behind the wheel and lays her head to rest with the phone pressed against her ear. Tears roll across her cheeks and drop silently down on her knees. The trail is red and runs passed bruises and abrasions. “Mom… Okay… Thank you… I love you… Could you tell Dad…”. More pink coloured tears fall onto her legs and floor.
“Mummy, mummy what is happening are you okay? Why you crying?”
A little boy on the back seat is strapped in his belt and holds his bear firmly in his tiny hands with white knuckles. His eyes are wide open to try his very best not to cry as well, still the fear in his eyes are evident of the opposite.
With a quick glance she checks her rear view mirror, not looking directly at her little man. Not wanting to scare more than necessary. “Will you go up to grandma for me darling?” Her teeth grind together as another shock of pain has her hunched over, squeezing the wheel and place her head back onto it. “Run straight up to the door will you do that for me?” She turns the key around and starts the car. Quick and easy driving off into the night.
“I wanna stay with mommy. Why can’t I stay with mommy?” Peter has trouble to keep his eyes dry and tears start to roll across his rosy cheeks from the warmth the car heater had been circulating.
“Please just for mommy I will nerve ask this of you again.” The wipers wish-wash across the window. Pushing away the water with every pass. At the end of each stroke a slap is heard and shakes up Vanessa a little holding her hand tightly on the steering wheel.
“You will be okay, right mommy?”
-“I am fine sweetheart you are big boy now so you can go on alone through the garden.
“Will you be watching mommy?”
-“Yes I will go and see how brave my little man is. Until you reach Grandma save and sound okay?”
“Okay mommy…”
Vanessa could see a small smile surface on to her sons face from underneath his tear wiping hands, who than quickly hold back onto his precious Teddy.
The brakes squeak and the car comes to a hold, in front of lit up house. All lights seem to be on and a figure is standing on the porch with clasped hands waiting anxiously for someone. In front of the window stands a tall man waving at the car.
She reaches back as far as she could without having to show her face and clicks the belt open. “Go on, see grandma and grandpa are waiting…”
To be continued… Tomorrow
I am doing this story slightly faster than the usual but you will understand tomorrow why that is. For now let me know what you think of this so far. What do you think will happen?
