Monday Moaning Shocking Numbers
Welcome to my Monday Morning Moans. A hour of venting and ranting and maybe ask a question or two about our society. We do a lot of research in our western countries and some of them can be quite shocking. What is next is a result from years of research, I am taking for average because not every number is crunched. So to me they are assumptions but still shocking to say the least. Or an approximate.
We know about sexual harassments and assaults.
Than why start of like this? Well, pretty much to come barging in with a kick in the door. So morning all, bet you awake now. SO we know it exist, we know it happens just not sure how much or how many times. We heard the stories of group rapes in and around India and we all know and think the same. It is horrible. It should stop. We should stand up. We cannot continue this.
I cannot agree with you more, just that most can have a second thought of it is far away, so I need not worry. And this is where the numbers kind of come in. Numbers that were formed from years of research in that small European country, The Netherlands. So what comes next are some of the results from a stand up Western country.
It is said in the report 1 in every 3 girls has been plagued by some form of sexual harassment/violence. A grope to the breast a pet on the thigh, it is that kind of thing. Even the naked camming is a form of this violence. The number of assaults and or rapes is a 1 in 20.
These numbers are a shock and though we heard of the India rapes, we forget to see that half a classroom of kids might be, being molested in some form of violating sexual conduct. And I say half a class because for boys it’s hardly any different.
Now why did I say these numbers are assumptions? Because we do not know all numbers as some do not come forward to press charges against their attacker. So we do not have all the numbers. But what we do have should open your eyes and be alert.
Okay so in perspective the rapport stated that 41% of the girls to a 23% on the boys get involved in some sexual harassment or assault. The difference gets smaller on the hands-off harassments. So 1 in 3 girls has been a victim of all this. That is a staggering 32%.
10% of the girls had forced manual sex. Okay just the hands to keep it simple. That is still a 1 in 10.
1 in 20 or a 5% of the girls have the forced oral or genital sex.
Are you shocked yet? I know I am. Because this is happening in our own neighbourhoods, the places we feel save. The research is a possible outcome as most do not come out or dare to talk about it years later. After all we are talking children here.
But where are we supposed to look, or know the symptoms. Maybe it is the lack of symptoms or signals. It is very hard to see and maybe even understand. But it is happening out there. What can we do as a community? What can we do as a parent?
To be honest, I am not sure. I think one fundamental aspect is that we could maybe believe our children. Children heard it some of you might even recognize it. Even more so if it is relative.
“Just a little while” “You do not want me to go to prison now, would you?” “who would believe you, you are just a child” and maybe most used, “Our secret” These are some examples used by those abusing. Not to mention the violators who use things like, “you are a object of lust” or “You asked for it”
Right now I do not have the answers on how we can stop this. Again believing a child is maybe a start. Telling them it is okay to speak up, and nobody will die if they do. Just maybe…
This is something that rips a human’s heart right out of our chest.
50% of those who violate are not even known by the justice department.
2 % is female and 25% is a minor.
75% of them are a person, the victim knows personally. The hands-on is slightly higher at 87%.
It has been a shocking result to say the least and not to mention how close to home it really is.
All numbers are an approximate since lots of victims do not come forward or wait a very long time before they do.
One conclusion can be drawn from all this. It has to stop. What would you suggest on how to make it easier to come forward? What can we do as a community around our very own back yard or playgrounds? I certainly wish I knew all answers right now. At least taking my head out of the sand.
Best Wishes
Ranting Crow.
