Monday Moaning: Seeing Blind
First off let me say sorry for not writing a Sensual Sunday Story. I visited one of the elderly in my neighbourhood to retrieve a pan I left on Saturday. That is a day we cook a big pot of soup and share with some of the older embers of the community. I just got overwhelmed with her story and our conversation I forgot. Next to that I helped some one with her laptop.
All that aside it came to a point of a conversation that kind of twisted my world. To a point where the saying: Where one eyes leads the blind, sort of came in to play.
Thing is she is getting blind and doing so at the age of 80 is not easy. Sure she gets a lot o help from her family, with as much as possible. Children and grandchildren alike do have a life of there own just the same. When it comes to aiding in something simple as setting the temperature for the heater on the thermostat, it shows our wit to some up with a solutions to help her.
It works with some red tape on the wall, Velcro around the clock like thermostat with a red needle sticking out to se accordingly to 3 temperatures. We are clever and smart. We can think up simple solutions to a problem.
Since this is frustrating to my neighbour for losing her sight, it becomes even more frustrating, and one I share more than ever now, that there are greedy shitheads making money of the disabled.
Yes I said shitheads and the greedy fucks they are. Hearing this makes you wonder if not going completely blind is even better. Now she cannot see more then a 30 percent per eye and blurry at that. Or that is how she explains it, after all she was able to see, so she knows best. What it would look like beats me. I just know she can’t see much.
With what is happening to her she is in need of aids to make life simply happening. Simple things have become hard for her, like mentioned the thermostat, something we take for granted. Reading a paper is impossible without a screen camera table to enlarge text she would be able to recognize.
Watching TV or reading a book has become frustrating to her.
And I am thankful that we have all these solutions to elp her make life happen again even if it is just a little. She is grateful that it makes her somewhat still independent. getting a stair lift to help her up is a gift. But slowly things are getting worse.
Now not an insurance will pay for al that. Not if one knows that a screen and camera to read something as every day as a paper costs roughly 1000 dollars. And if that is not enough they talk you into having a sturdy table for it as well at a price of 300 dollars. All this comes out of her savings for old age funds. imagine your whole life saving gone thanks to some asses who make money out of your unfortunate health issue.
Sure okay given she got the lift, she still had to pay for a special chair. an enlargement screen for her TV, special lightbulb and lamps. Not to mention a special magnifier glass.
Now the one eyed lead the blind.
We can see, clear as day we see a swallow fly where she would see nothing more than a shadow of a bird. we can read a book where she is frustrated that even that magnifier or screen can’t help her with her most loved hobby. The scrolling of the look under the camera is to much work if one can only read one word at a time.
But we who can see are smart and can tell a almost blind person what she needs, We can tell her how much she has to spend in order to live. Yeah we who can see clear as day can tall someone almost blind, how to see.
We cannot even start to imagine what it is like for her. She can’t see much, but we can’t even pretend to be her. So how in the world can we tell her what is best for her, and make god forsaken loads of money of her. That is like a stab in the heart of what we maybe should be like. Why do we not hep these people have the best possible life for a lot less.
Should it not be our duty as the rich westerners to guide these people to a happy life where they are less frustrated and having to pay for their own illness. One they never wanted in the first place. Should we empty her bank account to give her a life of her own.
Maybe we are blessed we can still see and even hear. But to be greedy when we loose our sight or hearing is simply heart breaking. We can’t even imagine to be in her shoes and what it would be like, but we can think of ways to make it better without having to empty our pockets. After all we would not want that either, that much we can imagine.
Seeing blind just got a new meaning. For we have lost vision on what life is about. Of how we can enjoy life to the best ability we have. No matter how little we see, we want to stay independent as long as we can, but it should not cost you a life. A life you prepared on living. of peace and tranquillity taken away by someone who can still see and just sells you over priced stuff that add up to a frustration. Where is the peace in that.
We should stop thinking we know better than those who see little or nothing. We have eyes and clearly we lost our way. We can see, but never what they can.
This is my Monday Moan. And all I can think of is how we can change our behaviour and our way of thinking. Will we ever over come our greed and God-complex. Thinking we are the greatest. Humility I think it is called, and it is buried somewhere or lost in our way of living these days. Maybe I am seeing things differently, who knows. Thank you for reading.
