Music Friday: Wanda Jackson!
Coming from gospel she gave rock n roll a try after she had met Elvis Presley (even dated). As one can tell I grew up listening to rock ‘n’ roll, rockabilly or however the genres entwined. Her voice was little raspy but that made it just the better to listen to. Fast pace music just fun to listen to. Being a woman and a beauty on top of it all, made it not easy on her even though. As for many women in that time, period. She could play guitar and piano and wrote songs all the while opening the road for more women to follow her into the scene.
She might be called a pioneer when it comes to certain rights or things that were said not to be for women. She surely proofed them wrong.
Per usual I would use songs written by the artist but in the scene of rock ‘n’ roll songs were often sang by many others as well. But as she set an example I am also mentioning her here, honouring her in my own way. Creating something new from pieces of lyric taken from the songs she has sung.
I’m in the middle of a heartache
Half out, half in
Silver threads and golden needles
Can’t patch up this heart of mine
And I never drown my sorrow
In the warm glow of your wine
Stupid Cupid you’re a real mean guy
I’d like to clip your wings, so you can’t fly
I’m in love and it’s a crying shame
And I know that you’re the one to blame.
I’m only human,
I’m just a woman.
Help me believe
in what I could be
And all that I am.
I’ve thought about leaving
but I’d go right on grieving
the window and the phone
A line a day when you’re far away
little things mean a lot
Don’t have to buy me diamonds and pearls,
champagne, sables or such.
Now we can go to a dance
He holds me tight
But then he don’t even
Kiss me goodnight
I got the blues like midnight moon,
shining bright as day
I wish a tornado
would blow my blues away
You’re in my dreams nightly,
don’t take my love lightly
Begging on bended knees
please don’t stop loving me
I thought that
you were wantin’ romance
When you’re on that floor
you’re cool man cool
But when it comes to lovin’
you need to go to school
I ain’t a gonna beg you
for your love anymore
Ever since the first time
I have, done, learned the score
You never knew how much I loved you
I tried but you just couldn’t see the light
You’re out there somewhere with her now
I guess it’s best for you
But my days are darker than your nights
Won’t be long until you’ll be leaving me
When you go, I’m gonna cry one more time
I’ll take back my heart one teardrop at a time.
My teardrops are running wild and dripping off my shoe tops
And disappearing quickly in the rug upon the floor
Oh memories apply expanding pressures to my thinking
Memories of love that may be gone for evermore
Cause everything’s leaving.
But somewhere I’ll find him
then I’ll have peace of mind
And the box he comes home in
will be all satin lined.
Hope you had a fun read. I will leave you with some of her greatest songs.
