Monday Moaning: Apparent Intelligence!
The word play may be a parent. Apparent Intelligence. Or App parent intelligence or as mention in the beginning a parent intelligence. And no this isn’t a dig at parenting rather than all the apps coming to market to help you become smarter more intelligent and even raise a kid.
In the last two years we seen a increase in app uses and more is being explored. Even to the point we can remotely turn on a washing machine. Yes as a parent it becomes more easy to have your wash done and waiting for you soon as you come home. IT makes me wonder as an old fashioned kind of guy how our parents managed to do all that without the help of a smart phone.
A phone called smart but only if you help to put in the right and correct initial settings. In the end it is as smart as the user itself.
But okay, apps are taking over the house and all small you things one could forget or should have a remotely controlled option.
I love the commercials they use to promote this crap. Turn on your washing machine and save money? Wait does that not mean I have to keep the machine on at all time. Does that not cost money.
Ooh it is sleeping. I remember the ideas behind that with video recorders and the decoders used for satellite TV. Were they not using half of what they would use when turned on while sleeping. Sure enough it got better, but use your fingers to count the amount of appliances you have that are on standby. Pretty sure each family doesn’t have enough fingers on both hand to count them all.
Here is mine. One TV living room, One tv bedroom, One tv kids room. One decoder. One dvd player kids room. One radio kids room. (hint when clock is visible turned of it is standy) That’s already 6. One might not think those wrireless, with a plug (how wireless is that) chargers still use power. It is a little but t does. Now the one thing we all swear by these days. A wireless modem/router. We need wifi but it uses power even when not used.
As one can see the numbers add up. Now we going to add more machines, like a washing machine, dryers and even a dishwasher.
How is that saving money. A light that can be remotely controlled needs to always send a signal and to do so they need power. Or have power to receive a signal.
But it is handy right. An app for everything, so smart.
Now let us move on to another appliance that is controlled by your phone or an app. The heater. Oh yes the commercial is fantastic, when the guy says; “At least I am coming home in a warm house.”
That said while the sun shine high and bright. But really turn on your heater when you leave work?
Most days you use the heater is when it is below 15 degrees Celsius for the US readers that would be a 60F if I am not mistaken. If it was that cold and that would make it autumn and winter and you do have to go out. Most homes with good insulation stay a nice 15 degrees inside making it always warmer than the outside temp. But we have become pussies if you ask me turning on the heater in the car to high so that even our home becomes to cold. That is only on feeling.
Second when they say it saves money we believe it intuitively. Still if your phone says it is 15 degrees at home and you want a 20. Again that is 60F to a 68 n 15 to 30 minutes uses a lot of gas as time span is to short to raise that much in temperature. Something to do with science and the crap.
In short it takes around 20 minutes to raise a rooms temperature by a 10F. And you can’t wait to turn it on when you get home. It saves you the entire drive on energy. Now that is saving money.
And the smart thermostats get better to. They can send a text message when a fire is being detected. As if that helps when you are at work. But in order to do so they need to be standby. Yeah and they can control lights as well. I mentioned that before right. I can understand the last reason that it is to make life easy. It is when you leave the house and you MIGHT have forgotten to turn of the thermostat or heater.
Though this is me the time spend at home, for me is less than an hour before going to work. So for me there is no need to even turn it on as it takes 18 minutes at least to heat up the room to begin with.
We are gaining an apparent intelligence through our phones an apps. None is smarter than your own common sense and yet we rely on the freaking machines. And though they might make standby use less electricity it isn’t said to be smart.
More appliances come into our home that need recharging and be on standby or else the app has no use let alone the to expensive machine.
It has come this far to insult our own intelligence and trade it for a machine to know everything and help us remind simple tasks.
Oh and if that is not weird enough. We use apps because it kind of gives us control (not) about how we drive in our car. Yes even cars send information about time we had spend driving the gallons on the miles. So you have a heavy foot. And you couldn’t have figured out yourself why your car drinks so much. Really?
But it is all good and we will forget about the fact that that information will also be used as research.
Yup my life is my phone or better my life is decided by the phone.
